Senate Passes Bill to Release Jeffrey Epstein Documents

The upper chamber of Congress on Tuesday quickly approved to a bill that will require the publication of investigative files related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the US House of Representatives and a shift by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The White House changed course after an extended period of trying to block the bipartisan effort involving a controversy that has dogged the president since his comeback to the White House.

Unanimous Approval in Both Chambers

Senators proceeded by unanimous consent, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, accelerating the process. Just before, the House voted decisively for the bill on a 427-1 tally.

Citizens have waited long enough. Those affected have waited patiently,” Chuck Schumer declared in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Let the truth come out. Allow openness to prevail.”

Next Steps

The bill next goes to Trump for his endorsement. He indicated on Monday that he would endorse the legislation.

Even though the president has for an extended period dismissed the outcry over the official management of the scandal as a “Democrat hoax”, he expressed his backing for the House bill over the weekend, and said he would give his assent if it comes to him.

Reaction

The Democratic party, along with survivors of Epstein and their supporters who were seated in a public section, cheered after the bill was enacted. The only opposition came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he feared the measure would disclose personal information of individuals involved, those under scrutiny and others involved in the investigation.
